TheQuestion's Quest of Sin is a game made in RPG Maker VX Ace, in which you follow Steam lover, TheQuestion619, on his mission to cop some Steam currency in order to purchase additional Team Fortress 2 Crate keys, as he is lacking.
The game starts off pretty straightforward, but near the halfway point you are released into an Open World exploration-type game. It comes with 2 endings that requires you to do a little searching to get.
In development for several months now, this game is fully released, and has no new updates planned. It is ready to download on Gamejolt, widget here:
It's been quite a long time since I've last updated this website. I left this game off in a sore spot, so I'd like to make amends and try to salvage what I can.
I am ashamed of the state I left the game, and the decisions I had taken during its development. Let's hope to set things right, and hopefully get a new expansion pack added.
Version 2.1.0 is now out!
Audio:
- Lowered the sounds of some areas and attacks (such as TheQuestion's default attack and Eucalyptus' Crucifix attack). I am trying to make the game playable without the need to go in your audio settings and lower everything, because RPG Maker is way too loud.
Animations:
- Gave each Detective ability a new animation.
Reworks:
- Reworked many areas, moving things around and making the world feel more alive. Also gives me more space to expand it in the future for what I have planned.
- Removed the ability for the player to swap between parties at will, it was a feature that didn't really work out.
Bugfixes:
- Fixes being able to walk into walls in Terry's house.
- Fixes potential future edge-cases of events occuring multiple times if you have Pooka in your party, or manage to get back into Hell.
- Fixes spawning in the debug area (Why did I never fix this sooner).
Misc:
- Removed nearly all RTP Data from the game's files, and it is no longer included in the download. This lowers the size of the program significantly, making it easier to store and download.
- In the future I'd like to replace all dialogue character boxes with a bust, I have the program set up and it is funtional, but it requires going through each dialogue box manually and swapping them.
A Steam release of the game has been cancelled. Unfortunately, DC Comics has refused permission to use their character, "The Question", to be used in the game, and Steam agrees that we are not allowed to use the name, despite the character being different with completely new sprites.
I am digging my teeth in and, sadly, this means the game will not be coming to Steam. I do not wish to sacrifice the quality of the game to appease the overlords that refuse to allow our creative freedom to run free.
A Steam release of the game is in the works. Obviously, a lot of content has to be changed due to Copyright, but I am trying my hardest to keep as much content in the game as possible. I am also adding a ton of new additional content that will be seen in the Steam version, however the Gamejolt version of the game will stay on par until it is no longer feasible (for Copyright concerns).
This game will be free, like the Gamejolt version, so the main differences will be Steam Broadcasting, Cloud Saves, and Achievements. I am trying to integrate these in the game as much as I can.
Version 0.9.2 is now out! Thank you for following the progress on this game, it means a lot to me!
Additions:
- The kid waiting at the Bus Stop will now run off when they hear an alarm.
Reworks:
- The previous patch of increasing the window size didn't end up working as I had hoped, without having to rework much of the game anyways. I replaced it with a better fullscreen, which is what I originally wanted anyways.
Bugfixes:
- Fixes softlock after defeating Tim Sweeney.
Version 0.9.1 is now out!
Additions:
- The game's screen is now larger
Bugfixes:
- The bed now gives the right text at the right time.
- Dur now appears when they jump on you, rather than being text -> battle.
- Exiting the Casino no longer crashes the game.
- The Casino's Gamblers now explain the proper way to playing the game.
Version 0.9.0 is now out!
Additions:
- You can now Gamble at the Casino.
- You can now backtrack to the Casino after completing the game, through the sewers.
- Fixed the bus stop times table in Party Acres.
- Inconsistencies before & after the shop is torn apart has been removed.
- More special interactions with characters & some more depending on what items are in your inventory.
- Replaced the prison cells in TheQuestion's basement.
- The Sewer boss is now actually a Sewer boss, and not a regular rat.
- Added more sound effects & animations in places I thought were lacking.
- The Casino now has their own BGM.
- The Town with the Casino & Store is now called Bagton.
- Added a bus stop to Bagton.
- Added a new enemy in the Casino, if you piss someone off enough.
- Added a new enemy in Treeville, they have a steel chair also.
- Added Russian Roulette to the Detective's arsenal.
- You can now examine more things around the map.
- Fixed the screeneshake in the top of the Mountains and in the Sewers, it no longer shows the other end of the map.
- You no longer have to talk to the Devil for the Good ending if you side with Eucalyptus.
Version 0.7.0 is now out! This comes with a few new areas, new bosses, a new item, more interactions (text) with in-game objects, many bugfixes, and new maps.
You can now enter hte Sewers of the main area of the game, for fast travel. You can also head West to obtain some bag (a reference to SPQ2).
Also added a new page to the Credits for playtesters. If you wish to be added here, email me some bug reports or suggestions on what to change about the game.
Version 0.6.0 is now out! This comes with 2 new areas, a new playable character, new items, playstyles that affect gameplay, the ability to escape from flies, tons of bugfixes and consistency fixes, and more.
This also completes ones of my objectives of making the Detective as tall as TheQuestion, rather than looking like a little small dude. I think this will be the only other 'tall' character.
Another large note is new credits for music. I added new songs so decided to take the time to rework the page, putting spotlight on the actual creators, rather than crediting 'Freemusic.org'.
It has been a hell of a lot of fun developing this game throughout the past month, and it's been rather refreshing to see the progress on the game go so smoothly.
There is likely more potential in this game than I believe there could've had for Poor Bird, which means a lot to me personally. I am glad you guys can share this moment with me for once!
Version 0.5.0 is now out! This comes with a new area of the game, with a new enemy, 3 new tracks, and new sprites, including an actual Markx sprite while looking up.
Version 0.4.0 is now out! This comes with some minor fixes, two new areas, a new boss fight (depending on the choices you made in-game), and a new interaction with the Taxi Driver.
A lot of effort has been put into this to be as in-depth as possible, while not losing the openness of the world and you as an individual making an impression on others.
This puts more groundwork for future interactions with even more people, and different playstyles later too.
Those with a keen eye will see that the Mountains of Moriah may have some differences now. The poster in the Shop may give you a hint to how you can find out what is so different now.
Version 0.3.1 is now out! This comes with some inconsistency fixes, more hints scattered throughout the game to help with puzzles, and my greatest accomplishment: Credits!
The credits is very barebones, but it is made in a Script I had written up myself. You can find most of the information about it in my Files Changed script, which lists everything I've changed for the game.
This is one of the best ways I can think of to attribute the contributors, and I really wanted to put this on the Title Screen, rather than at the end of the game.
This is something I very much wanted, and I wanted this to be very important, but I also did not want it to retract from the experience of the game, and the work they put in, by putting it in the player's way.
Verions 0.3.2 and 0.3.3 are also released, they just feature bug patches and is nothing notable.
Version 0.3.0 is now released! This comes with plenty of bug fixes, new sprites for TheQuestion, and whole new areas to explore.
Following through on the previous update, this is a further expansion on the Detective's roles, and expands further on the effects you've had on the world.
This update also adds more hints, making some puzzles easier to complete, and an actual ending for the Good ending. This will be available to download in about half an hour from this announcement.
The past 2 updates have focused on items you can find around the map, nothing linear or in your way. This benefits exploration, and gives extra bonus extra content to the people who bother.
My goal has been to add something to the lower parts of the Mountains of Moriah, but I have had no ideas so far as to what to implement. Markx being unfinished is also causing problems.
Version 0.2.0 is now released! This comes with plenty of bug fixes, new sprites for the Detective, as well as a content expansion on the Detective!
This is a lot of groundwork meant to help make further expansion on the game easier, as well as add extra content outside of the main plotline.
Day 1 patch is now live. Fixes a ton of reported bugs. Sorry about that!
The game is now available to download on Gamejolt in Early Alpha. Long delays happened due to sprite-issues, so the game is not fully released yet, but I got tired of leaving this on halt.
If you liked this game, perhaps you would also like my other game, Super Piracy Quest.
